16 Everyday Things Your Smartphone Has Made Redundant
Remember the days where we actually used mobile phones as phones? Nowadays they are much more effective internet browsers, mini home cinemas, job searching tools, and HD video recorders, but how many things in your life have been made redundant by your smartphone?
1) SatNav – with GPS and map applications built into your smartphone, all you need is an air-vent clip for your car and BOOM, you’ve got yourself a satellite navigator.
2) Review Magazines – with apps such as IMDB and IGN, there’s really no need to go and fork out a fiver for a magazine reviewing all of the latest games and movies, since you’ve got all the reviews you could ever want at the touch of a screen. That is, of course, unless you really want the free plastic model of Yoda in a magazine bag.
3) Point and Shoot Cameras – most smartphone cameras are more than good enough to take great pictures, whether it be a 43 MP panorama of a beautiful foreign landscape, or a selfie of you pulling the ugliest face that your body will physically allow.
4) To-do Lists – with reminder apps that will buzz to remind you to do things, why live in the stone age with a bog standard tick list on an old lottery ticket?
5) Calendars – your smartphone can now collect, categorise, and remind you of all of your upcoming events and birthdays into one little calendar app, so you don’t have any more of those awkward “Yeah, the present’s in the post, it’s really good though!” conversations at your 2nd cousin’s birthday party.
6) Fun at Pub Quizzes – Google and Shazam, whilst exceptionally useful and intuitive tools, have killed the challenge of winning a pub quiz. Unless pubs install military-grade surveillance systems and disqualify those who are caught cheating, the thrill of the pub quiz has died.
7) Going to the bank – all major banks have companion apps for you to check your balance, manage your account, and even transfer funds.
8) Burning CDs – there was nothing quite like the thrill of downloading a selection of your favourite songs from Napster for 79p each, burning them onto a CD, and then bopping along to some filthy beats on a long car journey. Now, just the tap of a screen will download it all into one convenient app, even though a song is now 99p!
9) Egg Timers – or any time related device for that matter! Smartphones have brilliant time applications, which can show you world clocks, time your lap around the running track or wake you up in the morning with a painfully loud 1940s evacuation siren.
10) Remote Control – there are apps that will allow you to control your TV right from your smartphone, so no more scurrying around trying to find those AA batteries that you remember seeing under the stairs 6 months ago!
11) Video Camera – many phones now have the capability to shoot full HD 1080p & 4k video, and even epic 240 frames per second super slow mo’s, which was completely unheard in consumer devices of any kind just a few years ago.
12) Photo Albums – smartphones can hold a lot of data, so you can keep all of your photos in an app and have them with you everywhere you go.
13) Notepads – ever come up with an idea in the olden days, not have anything to write it down on and find that it’s slipped out of your mind once you get home? No longer do we need to let potential multi-million ideas die, notes applications are extremely handy.
14) Computers – yes, we all still use computers a lot, but a smartphone can do almost everything your computer can, but in your pocket and anywhere you go! Usage of social media, job searching, and internet browsing is crazy on smartphones, which has led to the slow death of the “brb” saying, because we never even leave our devices anymore.
15) News – times of waiting for the weather forecast or the 6 o’clock news are long gone. Now, news is immediately at our fingertips within seconds of an event, and weather apps are constantly updating to give us the most accurate report possible.
16) Talking to Humans to Buy Things – if you touch your smartphone screen in the right places, a pizza will arrive at your door. This also works for couches, toasters and masseuses.
