15 ways to wake yourself up on a Monday morning

By Shaun Kirk

After a weekend of late nights, Meateor pizzas, and Jager Bombs, it can be difficult to get back into the swing of things at half past 8 on a Monday morning, when you come into the office to find your three-week old to-do list staring you dead in the face.

That’s if you’ve even got to this stage and managed to get yourself out of your warm, cosy bed! So, here are some tips & tricks to help you wake up in the morning, so that you’re ready to face the world of work without nodding off during your weekly sales meeting:

1) Have a Red Bull – Energy drinks can give people a boost during dark times, so if you have woken up questioning the very meaning of life, and wondering whether or not a world where sleeping for 15 hours and being awake for 9 being the norm would make you the happiest person in existence, consider buying one on your commute to work.

2) Do 10 press ups at your desk every 10 minutes for 1 hour – A bit of exercise never hurt anyone and, while you may appear to have completely lost the plot to your surrounding colleagues, it’ll certainly work wonders for kicking you awake!

3) Watch an inspirational YouTube video – Have a browse for “inspirational speech” whilst you’re eating your breakfast. Sure, there’s some drivel, but you might stumble upon something that will get your mind motivated for the day. However, if in doubt, you can always resort to watching one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s iconic speeches from the Wolf of Wall Street.

4) Ask a colleague to pour a jug of ice over your head – Simple as it sounds.

5) Listen to an extremely fast-tempo drum & bass mixtape at 80% volume on the way to work – I would personally recommend ‘No Problem’ by Chase & Status with the bass on full, however, most songs of this genre should have a similar effect.

6) Race a colleague three laps around your office and sentence the loser to a cup of water to the face – Competition AND exercise to wake you up?! This could potentially materialise into an office-wide annual tournament, but in the short term it’ll give you a quick boost before sitting at your desk, especially if you’re the loser. (It can also be done with chairs!)

7) Set your alarm as a loud, harrowing scream from a 1980’s horror movie, and bury your phone at the bottom of your sock draw – Not tried and tested, however, I imagine this would do a pretty good job at waking most people up.

8) Eat a lemon – Might as well.

9) Boggle your mind with a puzzling app – Find the most painfully difficult puzzle you can find on the App Store and spend 10 minutes frying your brain with it before work.

a4

10) Pop a ridiculously strong mint – Pulling a Snapchat selfie-standard ugly face for a second due to the power of a strong mint is a small price to pay for the quick and effective wake up call.

11) Go for a stroll before leaving for work – Another cliche for a list of this category, but some fresh air and sunlight can work wonders.

a5

12) Take an ice shower – For best results, leave it on hot for the first 5 minutes.

13) Have a sing song – This goes hand in hand with #12, if you’re happy going a capella, otherwise crank your speakers up and just sing your heart out to your favourite track. I’ve found that rapping Eminem’s ‘Rap God’ or singing Calvin Harris & Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ some time between 7-8am can prepare me for anything.

14) Chug some coffee – This wouldn’t be a ‘best ways to wake yourself up’ list if we didn’t include the obligatory ‘drink some coffee’ advice. If this is already part of your daily routine, you could try mixing things up by trying a new brand or investing in a Nescafe coffee machine to take the laborious effort out of actually making a brew.

15) Drop the bass and get down – If you can bust some decent shapes on the dance floor on a night out, who’s to say you shouldn’t do them at home? A good pre-work moonwalk, robot or even a one-man ballroom sesh will put you in a great mood. (It can also be used in conjunction with #12 and #13, however, extra care should be taken when moonwalking in the shower!)
