9 New Years Resolutions You Should Try in 2015
“3, 2, 1… Happy New Year! Wooo!”, bellows John, as he Jaeger bombs his way into 2015. “This year will be my year! I’m going to stick to my New Years Resolutions and lose that Christmas pudding weight from the holidays, and, most importantly, I’m going to have a dry January with no alcoholic beverages!”
We’ve all had one of these moments that John did at a New Years party, but how often do we actually stick to them? How realistic are they?
Here are a couple of alternate New Years resolutions for you to try:
1) Get your photo taken in five interesting places – Be it on a three-month trek around South East Asia in pursuit of finding out who you really are or getting the train over to Conwy to snap a picture of yourself next to the smallest house in Great Britain. Set aside a few weekends this year to go and see some epic places.
2) Stop buying things – They say that money doesn’t buy happiness. Then, most other people say something along the lines of “Well, I’d rather cry in a Ferrari!” But would you? Consumerism has driven us to spend our lives working for money to buy things we don’t need to impress people we do not like. Try re-allocating your monthly spends on your loved ones, going out & doing things or even meeting up with distant old friends.
3) Break a record – Whether you want to smash the world record for the fastest 100m sprint, be the quickest person to ever eat the monstrous £30 mixed grill at your local pub, or challenge yourself with breaking a personal record by not drinking alcohol for a whole 30 days, it’s always good to engage in some healthy competition.
4) Try a new food each week – Rather than the weekly cheeky Nandos, M&S salad for lunch at work, Fajita Friday, and chicken roast, get inventive and make a wacky meal that you haven’t tried before each week. You never know, you could find a new love to replace that lemon & herb chicken butterfly with Peri chips & mash! *druel*
5) Do a good deed every day – Random acts of kindness can go a long way, we all know that, but how often do we just do something nice for the heck of it? Volunteer at a local youth club or breakfast program. Invite an elderly neighbour over for tea one night. Donate blood. The possibilities are endless!
6) Yes man – As Jim Carrey demonstrated in Yes Man (2008), saying “yes” to everything you’re offered & asked to do can change your life around in an instant. Give it a go for a month, you’d be amazed at how many more things you’ll do.
7) Stay the exact same weight – While arguably the most popular resolution, actual result rates for getting that dream body you’ve always wanted are rather low, if you just join the gym and try to eat less bread. Some people go on crazy one-month crash course diets that lose them a few stone, or start taking meal replacements that turn them into a skeleton within two weeks, but maybe this year you could carry on as normal, maybe leave the Ben & Jerry’s to the weekend, and eat fairly well during the week. You’ll be happy and won’t hit that wall of disappointment when you put that two stone back on that you lost in January by Valentines day…
8) Get better at something you’re already quite good at – Always had a knack for guitar but never devoted a lot of time to it? Spend a few hours a week learning some cool new songs. Quite good at running but have never been down to your local track? Go down and see if there’s a club you can join. Only got a 0.86 K/D ratio on Call of Duty but want to play MLG? Crack open the energy drinks and watch some tips videos on the internet. Maybe the first two are healthier, but you get the idea.
9) Love yourself like Kanye West loves himself – Even though Kanye has millions & millions of devoted fans all around the world who have collected all of his CDs, bought all the merchandise, and have followed him since the day his first track came out, nobody loves Kanye like Kanye, which is something we call all learn from. “How do you expect anyone to love you if you don’t love yourself”, they say, which is true! Take a leaf out of Kanye’s book this year and just enjoy being you, as you’re the best you there is.
